Q: Where is the 2014 Int’l Montessori Congress being held, and when?
A: We jest that the International Montessori Congress is a bit like the Olympics–It only happens about every four years, in a different country, on a different continent. In this vein, the next Congress won’t take place until 2017, in beautiful Prague, Czech Republic. Details about this event are still forthcoming. Check back on this website for the most up-to-date information.
Q: I lost my Certificate of Attendance when I participated in the 2013 Congress. How can I have it reissued?
A: No need to fret, this paperwork can be regenerated. Simply Email Glenn Goodfellow Here, Congress Coordinator, letting him know your needs.
Q: Where is the 2013 Int’l Montessori Congress being held, and when?
A: The International Montessori Congress will be held exclusively at the Oregon Convention Center located at 777NE MLK, Jr. Blvd, Portland,OR, 97232. The dates are Wednesday, July 31 – Saturday Aug 3, 2013
Q: What hotel should I stay at when I attend the 2013 Int’l Congress.?
A: The Congress contracted rooms at both the Hilton Portland Executive Tower and the Hilton Doubletree. Unfortunately, both of those rooms blocks have sold out. There’s no need fret as there are still many options available to you. Portland has many hotels to choose from; economy to luxury. Some cost-effective properties we’re suggesting are: Residence Inn by Marriott, Courtyard Portland Downtown/Convention Center, Red Lion Hotel Portland – Convention Center, and the Crowne Plaza Portland Downtown Convention Center.

Q: What is the schedule of the Congress?
A: The conference begins on Wednesday, July 31st, 2013, with an evening opening Keynote address and reception. Thursday and Friday begin with plenary presentations followed by two breakout sessions, each composed of five morning and afternoon workshops. Saturday opens with another round of breakout sessions and culminates with a closing Keynote address and Gala. Sunday is yours to travel or play. View a more detailed schedule HERE.
Q: When should I arrive for the 2013 Congress?
A: Registration opens at 7:00AM on Wednesday, July 31. There are a handful of elective events taking place before the Opening Ceremony kicks off at 4PM. You can find a full schedule of events HERE.
Q: Who organized the first International Montessori Congress, and when?
A: Dr. Maria Montessori established the International Congress in 1929 to raise the awareness and understanding of Montessori education. Since then, 25 subsequent Congresses have followed around the world, with one held approximately every four years. It has been nearly 40 years since the Congress was last held in the United States, and its return is building much excitement.
Q: Is there any programming for parents at the Congress?

Q: Can I offset the cost of my registration by volunteering for the Congress?
A: Unfortunately the option is not offered to reduce the cost of your registration by volunteering for the Congress. More volunteer information can be found here.
Q: Who is organizing the 2013 International Montessori Congress?
A: The Montessori Institute Northwest, an AMI teacher-training institute in Portland, Oregon USA, submitted and won a bid to the Association Montessori Internationale to facilitate the Congress. Congress volunteers come from Portland’s thriving Montessori community and beyond.
Q: Who will be attending the 2013 Congress?
A: The International Montessori Congress attracts a wide swathe of people interested in both education and the Congress theme, “Montessori: Guided By Nature.” Attendees will be coming together from around the globe to discuss issues and developments unique to educating children and youth. Although not composing the entire populace, those trained in Montessori will represent the bulk of the Congress attendees. Montessorians work with children from infancy through high school.
Q: What types of Montessorians are invited to attend the 2013 International Montessori Congress?
A: The 2013 Congress is open to ALL Montessorians and anyone interested in Montessori education!

Q: How does the International Montessori Congress differ from other Montessori/education conferences that I already attend?
A: The 27th International Montessori Congress is your portal to the work of Montessorians throughout the world. It will feature presentations from speakers in diverse professional fields. In addition, the Congress will put the city of Portland, Oregon on display for your enjoyment. Local cultural events, performances, fancy parties, performance art, and Portland-style hospitality are waiting to greet you.
Q: What languages will be spoken at the Congress?
A: The working language of the Congress is English, with live translation provided in Spanish and Japanese for most of the programming. Other languages may be added as required.
Q: Are there any paying jobs with the Congress currently available.
A: Not at this time, but please consider becoming a volunteer. More information HERE.
Q: How many programs/breakout sessions will be offered at the 2013 Congress?
A: The 2013 Congress schedule includes 5 time-blocks, each allowing up to 6-10 concurrent “breakout” programs, for a total of 60 programs with varying numbers of attendees in each. Programs will be of varying lengths, with most being 90 minutes and some lasting 120 minutes.
Q: When will I be able to register for the 2013 Congress and how much will it cost?

Q: Are meals included with my Registration Fee?
A: Lunchtime meals with afternoon coffee/tea snacks are included. “Heavy” hors d’oeuvrs and wine are provided at the opening reception and closing Gala Portlandia.
Q: Is a travel visa needed to attend the Congress?
A: Generally, a citizen of a “foreign” country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. More information here…
Q: Should I check out of my hotel on Saturday the 3rd or Sunday the 4th?
A: All Congress attendees are invited to attend the closing Gala Portlandia, which will run late into Saturday (the 3rd) evening. If you are planning on attending, we suggest checking out of your hotel on on Sunday, August 4th. Please review the Congress Schedule for a reminder of the start and finish times.
Q: Are there activities for children taking place at the Congress?
A: Whereas the Montessori Congress is for adults passionate about the education of children, it is not an event for children. With that said, we’ve compiled a listing of fun activities sure to delight the youngest members of your family. Read more HERE.
Q: What is the best way to travel to the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower?
A: Taking the MAX train is the easiest way to travel from the Airport to the hotel, almost providing door-to-door service. MAX is easy to use, inexpensive, and runs nearly 24 hours a day. More information here.
